STANLEY WILLIAM HAYTER

PEINTER (1935-1975)

From  March 13rd until April 11th 2020

Retracing Hayter's biography is like writing a Who's who of 20th century of art: after exhibiting his paintings at André Breton's Gradiva gallery in the 1930s, Hayter devoted himself to engraving, an art in which he excelled. Many of the greatest artists of the time (Dali, Miro, Picasso and others... and even Pollock) came to take lessons from Hayter in his mythical "Atelier 17".

But beyond the Hayter engraver, this exhibition will show the artist's painted work, in about twenty canvases sweeping his entire career: from the surrealist paintings of the 1930s to the post-war experiments.

Several historical works will be on display, including Anthropophagous Landscape from 1937, painted during the Spanish War, probably Hayter's most important work still in private hands.
