Rose, renonce à ton nom

From March 23  to  April 28 2018

For the exhibition "Rose, renonce à ton nom", (Rose, renounce your name), Quentin Derout leaves a trace and writes the unique verse of a poem without words that is archaic and essential. Far from a lyrical gesture, it is a sweet and romantic melody that he plays. Nothing is hidden, but all is humbly offered up to the viewer.

Quentin Derouet’s works are the result of the encounter of a fresh rosebud and the canvas. Of wood, of cotton fibers and of a rose. And though the variations are myriad, each meeting is distinct. The brushstroke that resonates from the earliest cave paintings already exceeds us. Here it is seen for what it truly is: a mark that stains and extends outward, an opening that lets the history of painting reveal itself. There is an essence to these stokes, an honesty and a necessary fragility.  Rose, renounce your tired name. Your history is also your burden.

The brushstroke results in the destruction of the flower. It unloads the symbol and erases in order to invent new meaning. In so doing, Quentin Derout embraces the world with the bias of only a minimal action on the canvases hung on the walls of the gallery. We are encompassed by these strokes that are the primitive cell of the artist’s work, of the act of writing itself. And if only everything that should be was said with a brushstroke?

One day the rose’s time will pass. The deep red, the violet, these strokes will oxidize until they become black, in about a century. The time will slowly sediment itself on the pores of the canvas to create new rhythms and new dances.
